The Korea Watch Industry Association (KOWIC) said in a press release on Wednesday that hundreds of models of fake luxury watches, including Rolex, are being sold through Coupang, one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms. from the country.

The KOWIC asked Coupang to stop selling such fake watches and to provide compensation.

The association claimed that current trademark laws only punish sellers of counterfeit products without requiring online marketplaces like Coupang, which runs the distribution channel, to take legal responsibility.

According to KOWIC, 684 different models of fake luxury watches are now sold through Coupang at prices ranging from 200,000 to 300,000 won ($ 177 to 266) despite original prices ranging from millions of won to tens of millions. of won.

One company, for example, now sells fake luxury watches such as TAG Heuer and Rolex for around 200,000 won per piece, with a simple note saying that they are not original models but replicas.

This is not the first time Coupang has come under fire for authorizing the sale of fake watches.

KOWIC held a press conference in June last year where it criticized Coupang for failing to prevent the sale of fake luxury watches.

In response, Coupang said it is working to prevent the sale of counterfeit products preemptively using dedicated staff and innovative technology, adding that KOWIC is twisting the truth.

Coupang claimed that most of the companies selling counterfeit products on his portal transacted covertly using direct messages, which made it difficult to end the practice.

The company added that it manages a 24-hour surveillance system through a dedicated team of around 100 employees, while using AI technology to prevent the sale of counterfeit products.
