Tardeo police have arrested a delivery manager for a courier service provider, which works with various e-commerce platforms, for returning counterfeit branded smartwatches ordered through a major online fashion store .
Police said Saif Ali Shah, 25, and his friend named Ashfaq pocketed four smartwatches worth Rs 58,480. Shah, a resident of Nagpada in South Mumbai, claimed to have handed over all the proceeds to Ashfaq, who is on the run, they added.
According to the initial investigation, Shah created four different customer accounts on the e-commerce store and placed the orders. A few days after receiving the delivery, he returned duplicate products.
The matter came to light when the courier company in the first week of June alerted the e-commerce store to the return of a counterfeit Fossil smartwatch worth Rs 12,995. Complaint was later filed by Shantaram Chavhan, the courier company’s Tardeo office security officer.
As Shah had delivered the watch, his courier company questioned him. Shah told them that he had accidentally lost the watch, so he returned a fake and was ready to pay the fine.
A week later, during an internal investigation, the courier company learned that it was receiving three more counterfeits in return, and all of these smartwatches were delivered by Shah. Further examination revealed that the customers’ names and contact details were wrong.
“The delivery guy [Shah] used to replace products with duplicates which it then returned. The investigation revealed that he had committed such an act on several occasions,” said Vivek Shende, senior inspector at the Tardeo police station.
Shah was arrested on Friday for criminal breach of trust and cheating, and appeared in court on Saturday. He was taken into custody until Tuesday.
